Picuris-Peñasco Community Coalition

The mission of the Picuris-Peñasco Community Coalition (PPCC) is to improve the health and wellness of the people of Picuris Pueblo and the 15 villages in the service area by collaborating with health and wellness service providers working in the community.

For the past 23 years the  PPCC has organized an annual community health fair where participants receive free health and wellness information, flu shots, diabetes testing, water testing and other health evaluations at no cost. Activities are provided for young people and families.

The PPCC Serves Over 100 Community 
Members. 
In the year 2020 
100 Turkeys and Food Bags Were 
Distributed 
And 150 Seasonal Flu Shots Were 
Received

THE PPCC Addresses Needs In The Community Relating To 
Food Insecurity - The percentage of households that received SNAP benefits in the past 12 months ranged between 18.5% in Chamisal to 34.4% in Picuris Pueblo, compared to 15.9% in Rio Arriba County and 19.4% in Taos County.
Rate of Poverty - There are 40.2% of children under age 18 in PISD who live below the poverty level, which is an alarming statistic. The number of people in PISD with incomes in the past 12 months falling below the poverty level is 23.9%
And Unemployment - Across the region, the 5-year average unemployment rate between 2013 and 2017 was over twice as high in Peñasco (19.1%) and Picuris Pueblo (14.6%) as in the state (7.7%)
