Re-Use Center

Program Director
Jean Nichols

The Chamisal ReUse Center opened in 1999 and is located at the Solid Waste Transfer Station in Chamisal. The center is a place to drop off and adopt reusable goods that otherwise end up in the landfill.
It currently serves: 2000 community members
and is operated in part by 19 volunteer community members.

We have been successful in saving an estimated 50-thousand pounds from the landfill and In 2018, we won a New Mexico Recycling Coalition Award for the best collaborative project in the state. As we have seen, the shortage of drivers during the pandemic led to the dump being closed. Our services helped decrease the amount of waste entering landfill, which increased the time the dump was able to remain open between runs. In additon our program addresses critical community needs such as access to clothing and household goods and decreasing landfill waste. The re-use center also donates additional goods to Clothing For Kids.
